Waterfalls, lakes and mineral springs

Polikarya waterfall, its name derived from the ancient Turkish word “Bogatyr” meaning “hero,” is also popularly known as Shtany or “Trousers” for the twin-legs of its plummeting waters. The 70 meter high falls are regarded as the highest in Sochi and one of the highest in all of Europe.

The waterfall is fed by a glacier atop Aibga ridge and is situated in an area of subalpine meadows near the village of Krasnaya Polyana. Its location ensures there is snow near the falls even in the height of summer.

The route to the falls lies along a winding mountain road that rises through beech forests and reaches an altitude of almost 2000 meters above sea level. It takes just 30 minutes to reach the destination by SUV. The waterfall, nestled within a panorama of mountain peaks and spurs of the main ridge of the Caucasus, delights visitors with its incomparable and pristine beauty.

Visitors can admire the views of the main ridge of the Caucasus without any special equipment simply by taking the cable car from the Krasnaya Polyana resort. The car ascends to the top of Chornaya Pyramida or “Black Pyramid” mountain, the highest point of the resort, where a breathtaking panorama opens up of Krasnaya Polyana and the surrounding mountain peaks.

Excursions to the falls and hiking among the flowering alpine meadows do not require any special physical training and are fully accessible to any reasonably fit individual. Such simple walks in the mountains can be done by the whole family, even with small children.

To take a ride on the cable car, visitors must purchase a pass for the desired level at the Krasnaya Polyana ticket office.
