The history of Archangel Mikhail Cathedral of Sochi is very closely related to the names of the Holy Apostles Andrew the First-called and Simon Kananaios who travelled and evangelized in this area. Sochi chronicle says that birth of the Cathedral encouraged further development of the future resort city.
1874 is the date of the Cathedral foundation. Major construction works were finished before 1891and thus finalized the whole architectural ensemble of the cathedral church. The Cathedral and its facilities were reconstructed in 1992-1995 under the supervision of the architect F.I.Afuskenidi. The brick church was designed in an eclectic style and built on donations. It’s a cross-shaped building with an octagonal dome and a conical bell tower richly decorated inside. In 1930 the Cathedral was closed, then re-opened in 1943 and it works to present day. Today Archangel Mikhail Cathedral is Sochi central church and its main deanery.
