VOLKONSKIY DOLMEN

The Volkonsky dolmen is located in the gorge of the Godpik river, 200 – 300 meters from the Sochi – Novorossiysk highway. Some scholars consider it to be an ancient sanctuary where our ancestors once meditated.

The Volkonsky dolmen belongs to what are called monolithic dolmens. It has a flat platform cut into a huge fragment of sandstone rock at a height of four meters. A facade wall with a hole in it looms over the platform. Through this hole, a horseshoe-shaped main chamber with a spherical ceiling has been hollowed out. The only convenient stepped approach to the dolmen is located at the end of the wall that has the platform facing the facade, which then leads to a depression with a depth and diameter of 60 centimeters located on the roof of the dolmen. Part of the Volkonsky dolmen has been cut with a saw to expose a facade facing in the direction of the summer solstice.

The dolmen received its name in honour of Princess Volkonskaya, who spent a lot of time around it. It was built approximately nine and a half thousand years ago. It turns out that even then people had definite knowledge and techniques about cutting hollow chambers into hard rock. Some dolmens are positioned near springs, and the Volkonsky dolmen is located close to a source of mineral water.

A beautiful legend is connected with the Volkonsky dolmen. A young man from a rich and noble family fell in love with a beautiful but poor and common girl. His brother, however, forbade him from marrying her and called such a marriage a shame for the family. Hearing this, the unfortunate lover exclaimed that it would be better to be turned to stone than to live without his beloved and the heavens carried out his wish then and there. The older brother, amazed by what had happened, repented and resolved to share the fate of his brother. This is how the two stone statues appeared. The beautiful bride could not live without her beloved and turned into a small stream with cool, clear water.
