CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL TOURISM

Cultural and educational tourism now occupies first place in the world, even ahead of beach tourism. Its essential component is an introduction to history and culture. In this regard, Sochi has something to surprise its guests.

The rich history of the Black Sea coast can be studied through preserved buildings and architectural monuments. It won’t take much time and it will leave indelible impressions to visit the Volkonsky Dolmen, the Genoese ruins in Khosta, the medieval fortress of Godlik, and the ancient towers and walls of Achipse near Krasnaya Polyana erected between the 6th and 8th centuries on one of the routes forming part of the Great Silk Road. Within Sochi itself one can see the Vereshchagin viaduct and the remains of the rampart of Navaginsky fortress. Fort Alexandria, the first Russian military settlement located in the center of present-day Sochi is now protected as a national military fortification monument.

Historical and architectural monuments of a much later period are in excellent condition and are a delight for tourists. They include the Marine passenger terminal, the Indo-European telegraph line, Voronov’s Dacha, the Sochi Lighthouse complex, the Treasury building, and Yusupov’s House. Experts count at least eight different architectural styles vividly represented within the confines of Sochi. Splendid examples of neo-romanticism include Villa Vera, the villas of Jakobson and Zinoviev, and the Krasny shturm (Red storm) Sanatorium. The still-operating Pushkin Library, Gordon’s House, and the Ranovsky Brothers’ Teremok were built in art nouveau style. Examples of constructivism include the Voroshilov Sanatorium, the former Gorny Vozdukh (Mountain air) Sanatorium, and the Institute of Balneology and Physiotherapy. The Primorskaya Hotel, one of the architectural landmarks of the resort city, was built in Soviet art deco style, the Matsestinskaya Dolina (Matsesta Valley) Sanatorium reflects modernist neo-classicism, the Commercial Gallery on Navaginsky street an early modernist-minimalism, and the Dagomys Hotel – later modernist-monumentalism.

Sochi’s special charm is enhanced by the luxurious buildings built in Stalinist empire style, such as the railway station, the Marine passenger terminal, and the Ordzhonikidze Sanatorium. One of the most famous and frequently visited historical monuments in the resort city is Stalin’s Dacha located on the grounds of the former Zelenaya Roshcha (Green Grove) Sanatorium.

Interesting monuments of religious architecture in Sochi include the Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel, erected in memory of the end of hostilities in the Caucasian War (1864) and the new Temple of the Miraculous Image of Christ the Savior, built in the Olympic Park on the site where the ruins of a 9th Century Byzantine church were found.

Nature lovers can visit the Sochi National Park, the famous Arboretum, the Yuzhniye Kultury (Southern Cultures) Park, the Yew-Boxwood Grove, and numerous crags, canyons, and caves.
