Khrustalny waterfall is located in Sochi’s Adler district near the confluence of the Chvizhepse and Mzymta rivers along the road to Krasnaya Polyana. Visitors can reach the falls from the mountain village of Chvizhepse by crossing the road bridge over to the left bank of the Mzymta river and continuing upstream for a further two kilometers. It is recommended that they bring along an experienced guide to avoid getting lost along the way.

Khrustalny is powerful waterfall with a height of more than 30 meters. The water here rushes down down from steep rocks and breaks directly on the ground below without any collecting pool, causing it to splash in all directions over a fair distance. The waterfall originates in the headwaters flowing from the northern spurs of Krasnaya Skala mountain.

The falls are in very full flow after heavy rains, in the springtime, and during the snowmelt in the mountains. It is recommended that visitors wear sport shoes to protect themselves from thorns, wear protective clothing, and put their telephone, documents and money into a waterproof bag.

Страна:  Россия
Город:  Сочи
Краткое описание EN:  Lake Khuko is located on the border of Sochi and the Republic of Adygea, between the rivers Pshekhashkhe and Shakhe in the watershed of the Main Caucasus ridge.
Подробное описание EN:

Lake Khuko is located on the border of Sochi and the Republic of Adygea, between the rivers Pshekhashkhe and Shakhe in the watershed of the Main Caucasus ridge. It is found five kilometers west of the Circassian Pass and 6 kilometers southwest of Mount Fisht, and is situated within the confines of the Caucasus Natural Biosphere Reserve and in territory included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The lake is the subject of many mysteries as experts cannot agree on its origins. Some researchers believe that the lake is a remnant of an ancient sea, while others are inclined to argue that the lake is the result of tectonic shifts and glacial melting.

An interesting fact about the lake is that its water level does not change, although no rivers or streams flow into it. Moreover, neither fish nor algea live in its waters and even in summer chunks of ice can be seen on its surface. This is explained by the fact that a lot of snow falls in the area – up to 5 meters, and depending upon weather conditions, it does not always have time to melt. The lake is relatively small, only 260 meters long and 150 meters wide, with a maximum depth of 10 meters. Local inhabitants claim the lake has healing powers and the ancient tribes regarded it as sacred as well.

Visitors can get to the lake from the abandoned village of Babuk Aul. It requires a 20 kilometer drive along a poorly maintained road, so it is best to travel in an SUV. The entrance to the Caucasus Nature Reserve is not far from Babuk Aul and the visitor’s fee is 300 rubles per day per person. In the Reserve, the trail divides into two: the left hand path leads to the Circassian Gates while the right hand path heads to Lake Khuko. The distance to the lake is roughly 7 kilometers but the trail is difficult and leads continuously uphill. The ascent to the lake will take about 6 or 7 hours. Once at the lake, visitors will be greeted by picturesque landscapes of beech forests and alpine meadows and can admire the views of the western rocky bastion of Fisht mountain. Due to the high elevation – 1744 meters above sea level – the water is never warmer than 15 degrees celsius.

Подробное описание EN:

Keiv falls, one of Sochi’s natural gems, is located in the city’s Adler district, tucked away among dense mountain thickets in the picturesque surroundings of Krasnaya Polyana village.

The waterfall owes its name to Elmar Keivu, the Estonian tourism instructor who discovered it in the Sochi mountains back in 1967. Since then, the waterfall has become one of the key destinations for visitors to the Krasnaya Polyana area and at the end of the last century was regarded as the most popular attraction in this forested region. Today it is a favourite spot for many photographers.

A unique feature of the falls is that its waters do not dry out in the summer heat nor do they freeze in the depths of winter.

To get to the falls, visitors need to get to the Krasnaya Polyana tourist center of the Russian Ministry of Defence, the starting point for the long hiking trail that leads to the falls. The distance from the tourist center to the waterfall is about 2.5 kilometers and takes at least 1.5 hours to hike.

Название EN:  Aquarius (Vodolei) waterfall route – walking and learning
Подробное описание EN:

This small but very picturesque natural object is located in Lazarevsky district of the resort, on the river Psezuapse, near Tatianovka village.

Aquarius is not a high waterfall – its height is only 10 meters, and it is about 2 meters wide. The waterfall received its sonorous name in honor of the large zodiacal constellation. According to legend, the ancient Sumerians saw that constellation as the personification of Ana - the God of Heaven, who gives the Earth the life-giving and healing waters.

It is quite easy and entirely stress-free to visit Aquarius: there are comfy benches, easy to climb stairs and bridges that fit perfectly into the verdant picture of these charming places all along the path. It is noteworthy that in summertime, the water temperature here is actually equal to the temperature of the sea, and the shallow depth presents no danger for bathing - tourists can safely take a dip in the clear waters of Aquarius.

In order to get to Aquarius waterfall, you need to take bus number 156 or 157 to Tatianovka village. The same stop also serves as the gathering point for the tour groups, which are taken to Aquarius by guides.

Подробное описание EN:

The Park of Waterfalls Mendelikha was seemingly created for people to spend hours walking its paths, listening to the soothing murmur of its mountain streams, and feeling at one with nature.

The park has seven waterfalls in total: Mendel, Chara, Chervonny, Mishkin Grot, Aiya, Snezhnoye Ruslo and Zolotoy. When touring the falls, visitors can choose between three routes: the Small Ring (900 meters), the Middle Ring (1500 meters) and the Great Ring (3000 meters).

The adventure begins at the top of Rosa Peak, when you board the Edelweiss open lift and descend the southern slope of Aibga ridge. The main challenge is not letting go of the camera when trying to photograph all the beautiful sights surrounding you.

You will begin your visit to the Park of Waterfalls with the Small Ring route, where there is a small but very picturesque waterfall:

Mendel Falls

This 9 meter high waterfall is the gateway to the park. The falls are named after Boris Mendel whose life was tragically cut short not far from here. Having accidentally stumbled upon soldiers of a cavalry detachment scooping up gold coins out of the water at the lower (Chervonny) falls, Mendel, in fright, rushed up a nearby mountain slope. One of the cavalry officers set off after him. As the officer explained later, he had to shoot the fleeing old man for fear he might talk about what he had seen and that local robbers would then attack the detachment.

To continue to the next waterfalls, you must take the Middle Ring:

Chervonny (Gold Coin) Falls

This 20 meter high waterfall is located near the confluence of Chervonny creek and the Mendelikha river where at one time there was a ford for horses. Once, when crossing to the other side, a horse from a cavalry detachment that was transporting boxes of gold stumbled. One of the boxes fell and shattered on the rocks, and its contents spilled out into the water. It was this event that proved fatal for Boris Mendel, who became an unwitting witness to the incident and paid for it with his life. There is another version of the story that the gold being transported was part of the so-called “Gold of the Kuban Rada.” Many years later, local residents found Tsarist gold coins here, hence the name of the falls.

Chara Falls

The 9 meter high Chara falls received its name because of its shape. Cascading streams of water crash down from an arched cornice and form a sort of filled bowl at the base of the falls. In this way, the falls resemble an old Russian drinking vessel called a “chara.”

The most inquisitive visitors can continue their journey through the secret treasury of the Park of Waterfalls by embarking upon the Great Ring:

Mishkin Grot

This 6 meter high waterfall comprises a series of cascades churning among large boulders of the most unusual shape. The flowing water is constantly changing the speed of its descent and the direction of its movement.

Aiya Falls

This 14 meter high waterfall is named after Boris Mendel’s beloved wife. The name means “moonlight” in the local language. Water descends among the rocks at high speed in one powerful and plentiful stream.

Snezhnoye Ruslo (Snow Bed)

This small 5 meter high waterfall has a multitude of thin streams that spill out vertically over a ledge like a comb before maneuvering among a number of small rocks.

Golden

This waterfall closes the Great Ring. At 77 meters, it is not only the highest waterfall at Rosa Khutor, it is the highest waterfall in the entire Sochi area. It is seven meters higher than even the neighboring Polikarya waterfall.

Название EN:  KHMELEVSKY LAKES
Краткое описание EN:  The Khmelyovskiye lakes are situated on a level plateau of the Achishko ridge some 4 kilometers from the village of Krasnaya Polyana.
Подробное описание EN:

The Khmelyovskiye lakes are situated on a level plateau of the Achishko ridge some 4 kilometers from the village of Krasnaya Polyana. There are four relatively large and heavily overgrown lakes with the names Bolshoye (Large), Vostochnoye (Eastern), Yuzhnoye (Southern) and Zapadnoye (Western), along with several other much smaller pools and marshes. There are many legends and tales associated with the Khmelyovskiye lakes.

The name – Khmelyovskiye lakes – was proposed by the famous writer and geographer Yury Yefremov, author of the wonderful book Tropami gornogo Chernomorya (“Trails of the Mountainous Black Sea Coast”).  In the early 20th Century (1909–1914), Vikenty Khmelyovsky, a member of the Crimean-Caucasus mountain club and an owner of land near the lakes, studied the climate and flora of Krasnaya Polyana and was the scientific leader of botanical excursions to the area around the village and to the Mzymta valley and Lake Kardyvach. The lakes are named after this explorer.

The Khmelyovskiye lakes occupy an area of 70 hectares within Sochi National Park and border upon the Caucasus State Natural Biosphere Reserve. The lakes are self-contained – not a single stream flows in or out of them. The water in the lakes is fresh and only slightly mineralised.

The land bordering the lakes is covered in a forest of oriental beech with a small admixture of mountain maple and an undergrowth of Caucasian whortleberry, cherry laural, ruscus, and blackberry. On rare occasions you can encounter small specimens of Caucasian fir. Around the lakes, there are colourful subalpine meadows of flowering plants and grasses. Among the grasses there are fescue, foxtail and matgrass, while geraniums, buttercups, false hellebores, cinquefoils, gypsyweed, and caraway predominate among the plants. Of particular importance are the rare plants that grow here that are listed in the Russian Red Book of rare and endangered species, such as crocus vallicola, traunsteinera sphaerica, ruscus colchicus, cryptogramma crispa (parsely fern), erythronium caucasicum (Caucasian kandyk), fritillaria latifolia and gymnadenia conopsea (fragrant orchid). The collection of these plants is prohibited throughout the site.

In summer the Khmelyovskiye lakes are a destination for many tourists who are attracted both by the beauty of the lakes themselves and the surrounding landscape, as well as by the magnificent panorama of the mountains, which open from the horizon at an elevation of 1822 meters. On the highest point on a clear day, there is a wonderful view of the mountains Achishkho, Fisht, Pshekha-Su, Oshten, Chugush, Prishvin peak, Assara, Pseashkho, Agepsta, Kamenny Pillar (Stone Pillar) and Aibga.

The Khmelyovskiye lakes can be reached by forest road either on foot or with an SUV. The distance is 11 kilometers and there are 7 camping sites along the way where you can make a halt and admire the surrounding beauty.

Подробное описание EN:

Orekhovsky falls is located near the village of Orekhovka in a picturesque area of incredibly beautiful landscape some 14 kilometers from Sochi. The 27.5 meter falls are regarded as one of the highest and most beautiful among such attractions in the Krasnodar coastal region.

The falls are formed by the waters of the Bezumenka river plunging off a 30 meter high, almost vertical ledge (the incline is 70 degrees). The water falls in several streams and passes over two steps in the lower part of the falls. The water then continues past a small pebble beach at the base of the waterfall before converging with the Sochi river. It is the lower of the two steps that is regarded as the most spectacular. The waterfall is popular not only among tourists but also among spiritualists who claim it is a source of power.

The waterfall changes its appearance with the seasons. In summer, it can weaken, leaving slowly flowing trickles of water, while in spring and summer, when the river is at its height, it reveals powerful seething torrents. The falls can be reached by vehicle or by bus route 102.

Название EN:  LAKE KARDYVATCH
Краткое описание EN:  Lake Kardyvach is the “heart” of the Caucasus Natural Biosphere Reserve and is located at an elevation of 1850 meters above sea level, 35 kilometers from the village of Krasnaya Polyana.
Подробное описание EN:

Lake Kardyvach is the “heart” of the Caucasus Natural Biosphere Reserve and is located at an elevation of 1850 meters above sea level, 35 kilometers from the village of Krasnaya Polyana.

It is here that the Mzymta river finds its source, absorbing the strength of many rivers and streams along the way before flowing into the Black Sea. The lake is 500 meters long, 300 meters wide and 23 meters deep. Majestic fir and alpine birch are found nestled among granite rocks on its picturesque shores. Higher up, there are alpine flowers and even higher – eternal snow, whose reflection is cast upon the lake. Above all of them are the grey-headed peaks of Loyub Vostochny, Tsyndyshkho and Kutakheku. The area amazes with its pristine nature and wild, untouched beauty.

The lake freezes over in winter, but even in summer visitors will feel the contrast between the seasons. Some 4 kilometers higher up along a gorge, within a vast cirque strewn with glacier-polished boulders and exposed ridges of bedrock, there is Verkhny or “Upper” Lake Kardyvach (sometimes known as Maly or “Little” Kardyvach). The lake is 2472 meters above sea level and is 2 hectares in size, with chunks of ice floating along its surface. This is an area of rocks, snowfields and mountain streams, such as the Govorlivy, Ovrazhny, and Priglyadny, and is home of the Izumrudny or “Emerald” waterfall.

The best time to visit Lake Kardyvach and its surroundings is in summer and early fall when the snow in the alpine zone finally melts and the mountain lakes are freed from ice. In late September a golden autumn begins in the mountains and Lake Kardyvach, framed by colourful trees, is transformed into a real work of art.

The hike to Lake Kardyvach and its surroundings can take between 3 to 5 days, but it is better to plan on 4 or 5. During this time, visitors can sample all the most interesting sights in the Kardyvach mountain knot – lakes Verkhny Kardyvach, Sineokoye, and Utayenniye, and the Kutekheku and Loyub mountain peaks.

The trail to Lake Kardyvach is not technically difficult and is accessible for almost any hiker.

Название EN:  ZMEIKA WATERFALLS
Краткое описание EN:  The Zmeykovsky falls are located on the Zmeyka river, also know as the Dikarka, which is a right bank tributary of the Matsesta river.
Подробное описание EN:

The Zmeykovsky falls are located on the Zmeyka river, also know as the Dikarka, which is a right bank tributary of the Matsesta river. It is thought the river derives its name either from the Russian word for snake – zmey – due to its very winding channel made iridescent in the sunlight or from the name of the nearby mount Zmeyka. The most interesting portion of the river is the 600 meter section between the lower, fifth falls and the upper, first falls. The upper, first falls are divided into two tiers with water flowing down a steep bank of high ledges in six tightly twisted silvery streams, spilling over from an upper pool where visitors can take an easy dip. The length of both tiers of this part of the falls is thirty meters. Above the upper tier, at a rocky outcrop to the left of the road, there is the Izumrudny or “Emerald” spring, whose cold, crystal clear water is suitable for drinking.

After the second falls, the river turns sharply to the left and flows along a smooth stone channel at the end of which there is a third, cascading falls. Below the fourth falls there is a small picturesque pool 10 meters in diameter.

The Zmeykovsky falls are distinctive in that, unlike the Agursky falls, they do not dry out for they are fed by springs.

The Zmeykovsky falls can be reached by taking shuttle bus 120 to the “Zmekovsky waterfalls” bus stop. Then proceed left 300 meters down the dirt road which leads to the bridge over the Matsesta river and turn left at the fork in the road on the other side of the river. After 100 meters the path will be blocked by a barrier where visitors must buy an entrance ticket.

Подробное описание EN:

One of Sochi’s major attractions is the so-called Dagomysskiye Koryta or “Dagomys Troughs,” which are small naturally-occuring pools of water found on the Western Dagomys river. They were created long ago when rock strata collapsed and fell into the river, which caused obstructions and the creation of small basins behind them.

The chemical composition of the collapsed rock strata is heterogeneous and their erosion has occurred very unevenly over the millennia, which has led to the formation of numerous ledges, ridges, depressions and pools which resemble troughs – hence the name Dagomys Troughs. Foaming and bubbling, the flowing water falls from ledges and pours from one pool to another, with the interplay between the blue-green streams capturing the visitor’s imagination.

The pools and rapids make the Dagomys Troughs a beautiful spot and a favourite destination for visitors. In hot weather, they come to swim in the clear waters of the troughs and sunbathe by the cool mountain stream. The troughs are surrounded by moss-covered rocks, thickets of evergreen boxwood and Pontic rhododendron, and crowns of mighty oaks, beeches and chestnut trees. Many plants listed in the Russian Red Book for rare species can be seen here.

To see the Dagomys Troughs, visitors can sign up for an excursion tour or come by public transport. The attraction is only nine kilometers away from Dagomys village down an asphalt road that leads to the mountains.

There are two falls, one 4.5 meters and the other 6.5 meters high, located 280 meters upstream from the confluence with the Kumyshtepe river. Further along the trail, around 630 meters from the confluence point of the rivers, there is a 32 meter high waterfall which is the highest and most beautiful in the area.

According to a legend that explains the origin of the falls, there once lived a little girl in these parts who sang very beautifully. Years passed and she grew up to be a very beautiful young maiden. One day, the God of the forest, Mizitkha, saw the maiden wandering through the woods and singing. Mizitkha fell in love with her, even though he also understood that there could be nothing between him and a mere mortal girl. He decided to express his love for her in the form of a gift and created the waterfall named the Serenada Lyubvi or “Serenade of Love.” This waterfall was so quiet that its sound would not disturb the girl from singing. The next gift that Mizitkha created for his beloved was the waterfall named the Omut Lyubvi or “Pool of Love.” He placed a treasure at the very bottom of this pool that only a young man who was sincerely in love with the girl could reach. His final gift was the waterfall named the Kupel Lyubvi or “Font of Love.” Here, Mizitkha himself was present, but he turned his back to the font so as not to embarass the girl with his presence.

The aul, or village, of Nadzhigo can be reached by bus from Makopse settlement. After proceding through the village along the dirt road heading east, then south, and then north (around 2 km), you will arrive at the Kumyshtepe river – a right bank tributary of the Nadzhigo river.

Excursions to these renowned falls start from the village of Lazarevsky. The trail leads visitors to viewpoints that reveal an incredibly beautiful panorama of the Ashe river valley. In the distance, you can see the Rock of the Old Men, the origin of whose name has given rise to many legends. Your guide will tell you an informative story about the loyalty of children and the wisdom of parents.

The Psydakh waterfall, whose name translates as “beautiful water,” is located on a left bank tributary of the Ashe river. Its setting is unsual as most of the waterfalls in the Sochi area are immersed in green forests. Unlike them, Psydakh cannot be seen right away for it is hidden in a chasm which the river has bored its way through. This waterfall, a powerful stream of crystal clear water cascading down a black cliff thirty meters high, evokes sheer delight in many visitors. The waterfall actually comprises three separate falls of various heights. The lower falls are a little over two meters high and descend gently over a wide step. The middle falls reach a height of five meters and flow into a small pool found at its base. The upper falls, which are over twenty meters in height, are the most spectacular. Spray scatters in all directions as the water crashes upon the rocks. Beautiful water, indeed!

An abundance of varied vegetation grows near the waterfall, among which are oriental hornbeam, common ash and common hazel, as well as butcher’s broom, yellow rhododendron, honeysuckle and many other species.

It is thought that the falls resulted either from tectonic activity or from an overabundance of water in the river of the same name following the disappearance of a glacier many hundreds of years ago. Powerful streams of the purest water plummet from the rocks and form a small basin at the foot of the falls where visitors like to swim.

Not far from the falls, there are groves of walnut and pear trees as well as the legendary Narzan springs, known far and wide beyond the borders of Russia, where you can quench your thirst and refill your water bottles. Visitors to the Pluskh Cordon often set up tents here and spend the night under the starry skies. Access to the Cordon is restricted to the months of May to November with the tourist route closed the rest of the year. En route to the falls, you can also visit Grushevy Ridge, which extends at an altitude of 1500 meters above sea level offering panoramic views, and Engelman’s Glade with its more than 120 Narzan springs.

You can reach the Natural Biosphere Reserve by taking the electric train from Alpika Service train station or bus routes 105 and 135 to the stop at Service Center Megafon, which is located next to the nearest settlement. From there you will need to continue on foot to the Cordon. To get to the reserve by private vehicle, you will need to drive in the directions of Krasnaya Polyana and exit the road seven kilometers before the village. Then you will need to continue alongside the Mzymta river to the Narzan spring.

Polikarya waterfall, its name derived from the ancient Turkish word “Bogatyr” meaning “hero,” is also popularly known as Shtany or “Trousers” for the twin-legs of its plummeting waters. The 70 meter high falls are regarded as the highest in Sochi and one of the highest in all of Europe.

The waterfall is fed by a glacier atop Aibga ridge and is situated in an area of subalpine meadows near the village of Krasnaya Polyana. Its location ensures there is snow near the falls even in the height of summer.

The route to the falls lies along a winding mountain road that rises through beech forests and reaches an altitude of almost 2000 meters above sea level. It takes just 30 minutes to reach the destination by SUV. The waterfall, nestled within a panorama of mountain peaks and spurs of the main ridge of the Caucasus, delights visitors with its incomparable and pristine beauty.

Visitors can admire the views of the main ridge of the Caucasus without any special equipment simply by taking the cable car from the Krasnaya Polyana resort. The car ascends to the top of Chornaya Pyramida or “Black Pyramid” mountain, the highest point of the resort, where a breathtaking panorama opens up of Krasnaya Polyana and the surrounding mountain peaks.

Excursions to the falls and hiking among the flowering alpine meadows do not require any special physical training and are fully accessible to any reasonably fit individual. Such simple walks in the mountains can be done by the whole family, even with small children.

To take a ride on the cable car, visitors must purchase a pass for the desired level at the Krasnaya Polyana ticket office.

The Igristy or “Sprakling” waterfall is located in Maryinsky forest and invariably attracts numerous visitors who wish to admire its unusual beauty. The uniqueness of this waterfall lies in that its waters, which flow directly from a mountain summit before plummeting 35 meters off a cliff, create a rainbow visible from the below caused by the interplay between the sun’s rays and the falling streams of water. It is believed that this feature is the source of the waterfall’s unusual name. Over time, the force of the falling water has carved out a rocky bowl with a small pool at the base of the falls.

When the falls are at full flow, the water in the pool churns and bubbles similar to a jacuzzi. There are many large rocks and boulders near the base of the falls which serve as convenient places for tourists to relax on and take pictures. Before heading to the falls, visitors should choose comfortable, lightweight clothing and appropriate footwear since it will take a long time to reach their destination. There is no need to carry water though, as visitors will encounter many springs along the way offering the purest water, but it is recommended they bring along something to eat!

To get to the falls, visitors must go the aul, or mountain village, of Tkhagapsh. The most convenient route is to take bus route 146 from Lazarevsky bus station to the last stop, and then follow the signposts.

If you want to take a break from the bustle of the city and experience positive feelings and new impressions, then you should to go the valley of the Chudo-krasotka or “Miracle of Beauty” river.

You will begin your journey in the cool, picturesque gorge of the Godlik river. The main attraction of this site is a monolith dolmen which is a unique monument of an ancient civilisation. It was carved into a block of sandstone rock more than 2500 BCE. According to popular belief, the dolmen, due to its location at the intersection of faults in the earth’s crust, has energy properties and can have a positive effect on various human capabilities. According to local historians, this dolmen is the largest in the Caucasus with the size of a two story house.

Not far from the dolmen there is a mineral spring whose waters contain hydrogen sulphide and a number of other elements. Water from this spring is used for chronic diseases of the skin, musculoskeletal system, blood circulation, and nervous system. In addition, this mineral water also helps increase the body’s resistance to various diseases.

Passing deep into the gorge, you can see the Dva Brata (Two Brothers) stone grotto. This interesting natural monument consists of two huge boulders positioned as if their foreheads were colliding against one another. Local residents are the source of a beautiful legend about the origin of the stone grotto, which your guide will tell you.

After seeing these sights, visitors set off to the gorge of a nearby little river called the Chudo-krasotka. The crystal clear waters of this river flow along a bed surrounded by thickets belonging to an ancient Colchis forest. According to scientists, this gorge is many millions of years old.

The mountainous slopes of the gorge are covered with a vast number of ancient plants, among which are the iron tree and the well-known boxwood. The boxwood produces natural antibiotics called phytoncides which have a therapeutic effect on the human respiratory system. In the depths of the Chudo-krastoka gorge visiters can see the magnificent Laskovy or “Gentle” waterfall, which fills a spacious basin with crystal clear water from a height of 12 meters.

Visitors can get to the falls from Sochi in various ways. If going by private vehicle, you must drive to the town of Soloniki and in five minutes you will be at the entrance to the park. You can also take the Adler – Tuapse electic train to Soloniki station or take the bus that heads towards Lazarevsky.

The Bezymyanka river is located 4 kilometers north of the village of Aibga and is home of the 75-meter Bezymyanny or “Nameless” falls, a three-level cascade which is one of the highest waterfalls in Krasondar territory.

The Bezymyanka river originates in the springs and snowfields found in the crevices that run along southern slopes of Mount Aibga. Leaping from rock to rock, the river courses its way through forest thickets towards a steep cliff where it plummets, forming a three-step waterfall. The streams of falling water have carved wide notches into the rocky ledge, revealing multi-coloured layers sandstone, mudstone, and shale dating from the Cretaceous period. The layers alternate in grayish, pinkish and bluish colours before bending into a steep arch-like formation beside the falls at the lower part of the cliff.

Strands of Colchis ivy cling to stones on the rocky ledges and intertwine so thickly in places they resemble a gigantic, dark green blanket with long fringes. Lush clumps of ostrich fern cover the the gentle slopes of the ravine while single alder, sycamore maple and ash trees dot the bottom. High up, above the falls, a pristine forest of broad-leaf trees closes in upon the river.

It is against this backdrop of luxurious green foliage and multi-coloured rocks that the beautiful white-foamed waterfall splashes, sparkles and rustles. A rounded pool overflowing with ice cold water ripples down below. From here, the river, churning and foaming, rushes down through the rubble of huge boulders. Two kilometers further on it flows into the Psou river which runs along the border between Russia and Abkhazia before emptying into Black Sea.

Neither Aibga nor the nearby settlement of Yeremlovka can be reached by public transport. Bus routes 105 and 135 go as far as Krasnaya Polyana, which is only 10 kilometers cross-country from the falls.

Azhek river falls are a beautiful tourist spot near Sochi that no visitor should miss. The word “Azhek” is from the local Ubykh language and means “snow-born” or “snow-son.” The choice of name is not accidental, for the river’s headwaters flow from the summit of Mount Sakharnaya, whose lofty peaks are shrouded in a thick blanket of snow during winter.

Azhek falls were created more than fifty millenia ago during which time the cascading waters have carved out a small lake filled with the most prisitine water. The lake is the home for numerous snakes and is a gathering spot for badgers, wild forest cats and deers from the nearby forest. The ecology of the area has been preserved in its natural state thanks to the absence of any industrial activity. Gold mining took place near the falls in the 1930s but was subsequently abandoned. In addition to the falls, visitors can admire the beautiful evergreen boxwoods, 10-meter tall yew trees, wild grapes and other plants in the adjoining woods. In total, more than 130 species of plant are found here, many of which do not grow anywhere else except in Krasnosdar territory.

To get to the falls by public transport, visitors need to take bus route 102 to Orekhovka village, get off at the final stop and proceed the rest of the way on foot.
